Yesterday (Christmas eve) was about the most perfect day ever. I did a little bit of work until about 2, then we opened a family present, a nativity scene that the kids can play with. We had a Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, but now we have a more complete set. We acted out the Christmas story with the little people, and I think we kept the kids' attention pretty well.

Next we opened up our family game, Go Fish. Rachel and Jacob beat Ethan and I by quite a bit :(. Ethan liked the fishing part (there is a fishing poll), but he's a little young for the rest of it. Jacob and I played again and he has it down pretty well.

After the game we ate delicious homemade soup and bread while watching one of the Charlie Brown Christmas specials. I don't think that Jacob or Ethan really understood much, but Rachel and I had a lot of good laughs.

Then we took off to deliver cookies to six families and to look at Christmas lights. Jacob, Ethan, and I ringed and ran them (Ethan skipped the first house, but went along for the other five). It was a lot of fun. The second house we went to was one that has a few dogs. Ethan really likes hugging these dogs, so he was a little mad after we ran back to the van. When I was putting his seat belt on he was yelling about not being able to be with the dogs ;).

Because a lot of the houses had dogs, I told the boys that we had to be quiet so that they wouldn't hear us. After a couple of houses, Ethan started saying, in not so quiet a voice, "shh, be quiet, dogs will hear us." Even after we put him in bed he was telling us "shh, be quite, dogs will hear us."

After we got home, we watched a movie of the Christmas Orange story (it was an illustrated narration, probably 20 minutes long). Rachel and I are kind of cry babies, so it got to us... after it was over we all ate a few small oranges (except Ethan, who refuses to touch fruit; though the look on his face after taking his only bite was priceless).

Next I read "The Night Before Christmas" and then Rachel read a book we got called "Christmas for a Dollar." Apparently it's based on a true story, and Rachel and I were kind of cry babies again...

Once the kids were in bed Rachel and I started watching a Christmas movie (it was a budget film, but pretty good). We started with hot chocolate and then had ice cream, what could be better? Near the end of the film we wrapped up the boys' presents.

It was such a great day!

Today (Christmas) was also fun. Ethan came down to our bed at about 7:30, but just wanted to sleep with us. Jacob came down a little latter wondering if he could open his presents. So we got up, and started opening our presents. Makaylin received a couple of dolls and a blanket with a little stuffed bear sewed onto it (from a great aunt). Ethan received a six wheeler truck (from his great aunt) and a soft bench that also folds out into kind of a bed. Jacob also received a similar truck and a backpack with wings like Buzz Lightyear (he's been wearing his helmet on his back pretending that it was the backpack for a while now). Rachel got screen protectors from Ethan, power cords from Jacob, and a GPS from all of us. I got socks from Jacob (Rachel...) and lolly pop rings from Ethan. My aunt also got us a sweet gift card ;). My parents joined us via web cam so that we could all show off our gifts.

For breakfast we had some chocolate flavored pancakes with bananas and whip cream. Then watched a quick Christmas video (an illustrated reading of "The Night Before Christmas"). The rest of the day was pretty much spent watching "The Santa Clause" (1, 2, and 3).

So, it was a pretty awesome Christmas.

Thursday, December 24, 2009

So I had just put Rachel to bed (we'd said our prayers and I was off to write in my journal/blog and she was writing in her journal, then going to sleep), and not two minutes later I hear her coming up the stairs (ok, I wasn't writing...). What could she want? I met her half way up the stairs and asked what was going on. She said that she needed to have a few gram crackers and peanut butter (she has low blood sugar, so a little peanut butter gets her through the night).

So I offered to get them for her so that she could eat them in bed to which she responded that she'd get crumbs in our bed. So I let her up, and then watched her as she discovered wrapping paper on the floor (I hid her present when I heard her coming). She questioned me on the occasion (as we'd agreed not to get each other anything). It's true, I did get her a small gift, I mean, come on, after all the work she puts in, doesn't she deserve it?

What I wanted to do was to crawl into bed and have her ask me what took me so long, to which I'd respond, "I was just doing some last minute wrapping" and then pretend that I'm asleep... I guess there's always next year.

Merry Christmas!

Today Jacob and I had this exchange:
"mom said how many cookies can we make"
"three, one for mom and two for me"
"what about me and Ethan"
"Oh, it's no problem, you can watch us eat them"
"but how about we make seven" (as he's holding up ten fingers)

So I said ok and off he went. But I was wondering, why seven? he at least knows that 20 is a high number (about the highest I hear him count to anyway), so why stop at seven? Maybe we haven't Americanized him enough.

Celebrated my birthday this evening by watching a movie while eating pizza and cake. The pizza was pretty good (papa john's), the move was ok (corpse bride), and the cake was awesome (market of choice). We decided that there is no point in buying 15 square feet of cake if we don't really like it, so we went with about the smallest cake anyone makes (for the same price as the 15 sq ft), and we've decided that marked of choice is going to make all of our cakes in the future.

We also went Christmas shopping today, and even bought our kids a present each (normally we leave this to others, but as I have Jacob convinced that we should take all of his toys to goodwill, I figure they'll need something to play with...). Plus Jacob and I discovered his present a couple of months ago while wandering the toy aisle, and he hasn't stopped talking about it (and pretending that his helmet is it).
A couple of days ago Jacob asked me to blow on his mac & cheese because it was hot. I told him that he could do it, he has a lot of air.

Just a few minutes ago, Ethan was saying that his mac & cheese was hot, then he started saying "no Jaykey (Jacob)." When Rachel went to check on them, Jacob was blowing into Ethan's bowl and telling Ethan "It's ok, I've got a lot of air."

I should probably start blogging again so:

I'm the elders quorum secretary - I mostly try to get interviews scheduled

I got an 'A' in my distributed systems class - now the pressure is on to keep the new transcript perfect...

Nothing else to say.

I've been working on 35% of my grade yesterday and today (and tonight and tomorrow, when it's due). I took a break to play with Jacob for a few minutes, and when I was telling him that I had to go back to work on my report, he said that it was dumb. I told him that I can't wait until I'm all done with school and he said:

"because then we can start having a boat?"

To which I said, "Sounds good to me."

We had our first Thanksgiving dinner tonight. Julia, Jason, Aliona, Glen, and my mom were here to enjoy it. We'll have a second one on Sunday with Chris, Ali, Hunter, Grace and my mom. Julia's crew has been here since Wednesday, and my mom since Monday. It's been a lot of fun seeing everyone, but I've also been trying to make up for lost hours from last week when I went to the super computing conference.

Since it's Thanksgiving: I'm thankful that we've been able to see everyone.

Thursday, November 12, 2009

I spent the day making about 20 minutes of video demoing some software for a presentation. NOT FUN. But I'll tell you what is, buying two pies and two things of ice cream for the price of one of the items individually. Speaking of which, I should eat some ice cream and go to bed.

This last weekend I took part in a programming competition. A programming competition is where geeks get together to try and solve some problems as fast a possible, the team that solves the most problems (or if there is a tie on the number of problems solved, the fastest team) wins. This was the big one, run by the ACM and sponsored by IBM.

As an example of one of the problems, our program was to take in seven numbers and calculate the lowest(ignoring any decimals) number that could not be generated by taking the seven numbers and adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing the set of numbers together (so if the numbers were 1 2 3 4 5 6 7, one number you could generate would be 1 + 7 - 2 * 6 / 3 + 4 * 5).

Another problem involved taking in a large tick-tac-toe board and deciding where to play so that our opponent could win (all of the problems were star wars based, and this was c3po playing chewabacca, in which case c3po wants to make sure that chewabacca wins on the next round so that he doesn't pull his arms off).

Anyway, it was a lot of fun, my team mates were a lot smarter than I so we ended up 25th out of 77th (but if we would have been able to make one of our programs run little faster (it was giving the right answer, but exceeding the time limit) we would have been 15th (and going to China for the finals)).

Today we met with our new Bishop, he is pretty relaxed and seems really nice. While we were in his office, he gave Ethan a couple of cars to play with and Jacob a play phone. Jacob was chatting on it and for a while the other person on the phone was Jesus. When we were getting ready to go, the Bishop shook Jacob's hand and asked him who he was talking to on the phone, he said Jesus and the Bishop said, "oh are you going to talk to Jesus tonight when you say your prayers?" To which I said, as if telling Jacob but loud enough for all to hear, "can you say, Bishop, we only pray to Heavenly Father, you're teaching false doctrine."

Ok, so reading over this it doesn't sound very funny, but with the joking around we were doing before this, it was (and maybe still is to Rachel and I) pretty funny.

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

When Rachel picked me up from school this evening, Jacob said, "can we pick up a pizza." We usually eat pizza a couple of times a week (when Rachel was sick from being pregnant, I took over the cooking, and its kinda stuck). We mostly eat frozen pizzas because they're cheaper, but about once a month we pick one up.

Anyway, Jacob never eats it. If we threaten him with bed or eating his pizza, he'll take a small bite, but he has to think that we're serious. So I asked him why he wanted to pick up a pizza and he just said that he wanted pizza. So I asked him why he wanted to watch a pizza (yes, watch a pizza) so bad and he said that he really wanted pizza. We usually eat pizza for our date night while we watch a movie. So we, got home, threw a pizza in. When we sat down to eat (we always eat in our living room) Jacob asked what movie we were watching and Ethan started saying he wanted to watch Spider man (which shocked us as he always says cars).

I almost gave in as we just got our first netflix today, but as I've got a meeting in 9 hours, reason finally prevailed (is it bad that our kids are going to bed at midnight? and that I can still hear them running around right now [at 12:30]?).

Monday, November 2, 2009

On Friday we went to the church's "harvest fest" in which we ate a lot of chili (there was a men's cook-off), played some games, and trunker-treated. It was a lot of fun, and kind of a saying good-bye for us (last Sunday was the primary program, so we started going to our new ward today).

On Saturday we went tricker-treating around the apartment complex and then to Steve's (my boss) annual Halloween party. There we a few places that really decorated at the complex, one had a flashing light with a mannequin on a large pumpkin. The boys got within 15 feet and stopped. They kept saying, it's too scary, and I kept telling them, I bet they have a lot of candy. Eventually they decided that it wasn't worth it, so we started on to the next door and the people opened the door (they must have been able to hear us), and told the boys that it was safe to come and get some candy, which they timidly did.

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Jacob told me that someone was telling him that he was dumb. I told him that it's ok, they don't know what they're talking about, your awesome. He then said, "yeah I said, guys, we need to stop saying dumb."

I thought, oh, what a nice little boy I have, and then he said:

"Yeah, then I pushed them into the wall and they died."

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Jacob found a magical green pumpkin that makes all your dreams come true (except the scary ones, and the one that your at school in only your underwear...).

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Allison, Hunter, and Grace came over for a couple of days this last weekend (they went home yesterday). It was really fun seeing them and the kids had a fun time running around together. We went to a pumpkin patch too; I love Ethan's sour face in this one:

Monday, October 5, 2009

One night last week, when I was putting Jacob and Ethan to bed, Jacob starting crying (he was really tired). I asked him why he was crying and he said that Ethan had one of his airplanes and he wanted it. I suggested that he do the usual thing, go and find a toy that Ethan might want and try to trade him. Jacob tried several toys to which Ethan responded "don't want to" to each. Finally Jacob broke back down and started crying again. I told him it was alright as he already had an airplane in his bed, to which he said "but Ethan doesn't even like airplanes, he likes race cars." Which is so true... thinking back, I wonder why he was playing with that airplane.

While watching conference this last weekend, at one point Ethan wanted a toy that Jacob had. We told Ethan that Jacob was playing with it and that he should go and find a different toy. Within a minute, Jacob went and told Ethan to come and open a present, it was the toy Ethan wanted wrapped up in a blanket. While giving Jacob a hug I told him that that was really nice of him and that he was a really good big brother, he then turned to me and said "you have really cute kids."

It's only the first week of class (i.e. the easiest week) and I missed basketball tonight as I had to put in a couple of hours of work :(.

News flash (related to basketball): my big toe nail has almost completely fallen off, I hope it grows back...

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

First day of class was a little scary... I wonder how much I have to do to get a B- (which is the lowest I can go while fulfilling my requirement). I will say this, the 100 pages (of the 130 assigned) I've read have been interesting.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Our home teacher came over today. He doesn't know how great he is as an example of a disciple of Christ. Hmm, still another 47.75 hours left for me to do my home teaching (well, visit one family we missed)...

Monday, September 28, 2009

We blessed Makaylin today. The blessing was somewhat short; something she was promised was the gift of faith and the gift of knowledge, which I thought was kind of cool. Rachel's parents and a good friend, Kristina, spent the day with us.

Sunday, September 27, 2009

While I was watching the boys today, Jacob fell asleep on me while I was working (at the computer). After a little while I decided that 5pm was not a good time to take a nap, so I put on some rock music on from pandora. Jacob woke up, but after a while we (he) started to wonder where Ethan was (since he was in charge of watching Ethan and I while Rachel was gone).

Anyway, we didn't hear any noises and Ethan didn't respond when we yelled his name, so we got up to check upstairs and there he was! on the second step, a foot away, asleep!

Today I sat through some more grad school orientation. It wasn't too bad as I got to know a few of the other students, and they fed us lunch at an Indian restaurant. While at lunch, I was sitting at a table for four, all of the seats were taken, so the department head pulled up a chair to sit with us. Because it was a buffet, he left to go and get his food, but another professor, one of my favorites, was looking for a place to sit. I told her (Zena) to come and take the seat as Andrzej was going to sit with us if she didn't. She did, and when Andrzej came back he said something about her not getting her next pay raise, and she said something about getting the money out of me since I talked her into taking his seat.

While eating I announced that we had a little girl over the summer break, Zena asked how I could be so relaxed with all of the stuff going on in my life and I told her that I didn't take any of Steve's deadlines very seriously (he's my boss and was sitting near by). She then asked if we had any help; I told her that Rachel is no ordinary woman.

Friday, September 25, 2009

Makaylin will smile for Rachel, and probably Jacob (she likes to show me how loud she can cry). She has done so for a while now, but tonight she laughed, twice! She was sleeping and we heard her make a little grunt/laugh. I thought it was a grunt, Rachel was voting for a laugh, and then we heard it again, much more pronounced and a little longer, a laugh! She then woke up and we tried to get her to smile or laugh to no avail.

No point in going back and trying to fill in the past few weeks (month?). Today I sat through GTF/GRF (the research fellowship I have for school this next year) orientation. It wasn't too bad as I had my netbook (little laptop) with me and was able to do some programming. Classes start on Tuesday and I'll be really busy working 40 hours, taking one of the 'core' required classes, working on a final project, and sitting in on a seminar I really want to take. Basically, I might have a nervous breakdown and drop out of school.

Friday, August 21, 2009

Ok, it looks like we are really moving! At least we've put down a deposit, so it would take a major catastrophe to stop us now. The bad news is that we'll be out of the ward boundaries, but it looks like we might keep going to Springfield 2nd until after the primary program (Rachel is the primary president and there isn't a lot of time to get someone else in and up to speed). The location isn't bad: the bike ride is about 10 minutes slower, but the bus ride is 10 minutes faster. Anyway, I guess we better start packing our bags.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

Well, it looks like we might be moving before school starts (in a month or so). We've been accepted at one place and are going to take a look at another tomorrow; both are three bedroom appartments. We looked at a lot of houses, but we couldn't find anything in our price range that was near the school. Anyway, Jacob is really excited so I keep telling him it's like when we told him he was going to have a baby sister: it's so far away that you won't really believe that we are moving when we finally do.

Friday, August 14, 2009

Makaylin is doing great. She is now two weeks old and has gained the most weight of any of our children at two weeks old (she is now 7 lbs 6 oz, Jacob was 6 13, and Ethan was barely alive). Here are a couple of pictures that Rachel didn't put on her blog:

At least we know that we have two capable babysitters.

Jacob had a bloody nose earlier in the day, when he took a shower the water mixed with the dried blood (Rachel doesn't like it when I take bloody nose pictures). I think he looks very grown up with that mustache.

This is the trailer behind papa Rogers' vroom vroom (4 wheeler)

Last night while Jacob was saying a prayer, he said:
"and help Makaylin, go in the vroom vroom, and in the trailor"
And Rachel said that in an earlier prayer that day, Jacob said something to the effect of:
"and help Makaylin go in the trailor, but it's too bumpy"

Needless to say, the boys had a really fun week with grandma and papa while Rachel and I enjoyed a child that couldn't talk back.

Sunday, August 9, 2009

Rachel got up at 4 am last night to feed Makaylin but they both fell asleep on the couch after a short time. Rachel then woke up at 6 am, and needing to go to the bathroom, discovered Jacob asleep on the floor with dried blood all over his face (from a bloody nose). She woke him up, cleaned him up, and asked him if there was any blood else where.

"ya, on the bed"

Rachel enters our room to discover a pool of dried blood at my feet

"what happened?"

"I told daddy that I had a bloody nose, but he didn't help me"

I guess I'm that good, I can ignore all cries regardless of the source (newborn, infant, toddler); It must be nice to be me ;)

The story: his side

Thursday night as we were going to bed I gave Rachel four kisses, telling her that she would only have four more nights of no sleep, then she might get some in two hour blocks. She was very mad at me, saying that I was cursing her to four more nights, but I told her I had to go with the maximum as I wanted an excuse to kiss her as many times as I could.

Friday morning at 6 am my alarm went off and I crawled out of bed to get dressed for basketball when Rachel told me she had a dream that she was having contractions.

When I got home at 7:30 am she was on the couch saying that she might of had a couple of contractions, but that she wasn't sure. After I took a shower she mentioned that she was pretty sure that she had experienced a couple of real contractions, and that she was going to take a bath.

Since I can work from home (though it takes 12 hours to put in 8), I decided I'd hang out a couple of hours to see if they went away. While she was taking a bath, the boys woke up. When Rachel got out of the bath and I noticed her on the floor (in her favorite "I'm having real contractions" position). So we started getting things ready just in case we needed to go to the hospital.

At about 10:40 her contractions seemed to be pretty close together so we started timing the frequency and duration, which ended up being about every three to four minutes, lasting 30 to 40 seconds. After an hour of timing, a good friend came over and took the boys swimming while we headed off to the hospital.

We got to the hospital at about 12:15; if you really want to get a room fast, just drop to the floor while talking to the admissions staff (this only works if you're the one having the baby). Once in our room Rachel's contractions seemed to be getting harder and we asked for an epidural if we weren't too late. They said she was at a four and that she could probably get one.

At about 1:30 the anesthesiologist made it to our room (there were something like nine women in labor at the same time). He got her hooked up and feeling pretty good (all things considered). Apparently the catheter was a little off to one side as her right leg went completely numb but she kept some feeling in her left.

Rachel's blood pressure dropped a bit so they gave her some drugs to constrict her blood vessels and started her on her second bag of fluid (whatever they were feeding into her IV). Makaylin's heart rate was also a little low (something like 110 beats per minute - they like it above 120, but they weren't too concerned as long as it didn't drop any more than it had).

At 4:15 or so the doctor felt like it was time to start pushing and at 4:25 Rachel was cutting the umbilical cord (something she had been wanting to do). Rachel's parents made it to the hospital around 4:45. Because of swine flu, no children under the age of 12 were allowed up on the fifth floor (where the babies are), so Jacob and Ethan couldn't come and see their baby sister :( They were allowed to see their grandparents though, and even got to go home with them ;)

We were very blessed with a great delivery and excellent medical care.

Makaylin Rae Wittig

A friend (McKay) emailed us suggesting a name she really likes (McKay); then another friend (Lynn) replied to the before mentioned email with the suggestion of McKay Lynn. After we read the emails, we repeated the name McKay Lynn Rae Wittig several times, we really liked it!

Here are some pictures I just took, at first she was sleeping, so I changed her diaper and took a few more. I really like the last two ;)

We (Rachel) had a baby yesterday (Friday); 6 lbs 9 oz, 20.5 in; Jane Doe Wittig

Monday, July 27, 2009

Rachel had her weekly ob visit (ok, I change my mind, I bet she'll have her baby by Tuesday), anyway this gave the boys and I an opportunity to go down to the river and splash each other. The water was very cold, but you got used to it, and there were lots of rocks to throw. Ethan stayed the coolest as he kept loosing his balance while trying to pick up rocks in the river. Sorry, no pictures.

Ok, it's been a really long time since I've written to you, my dear journal (when it was paper it was a lot easier to write a bit every night, btw a bit is a one or zero in computer talk...). Anyway, I've been playing basketball, a lot. A lot a lot. Well, at least a lot for me. I really want to go to the church tomorrow morning (in like 5 hours), but my blisters... Wednesday night was awesome (I'm still recovering), but I felt like I was actually valuable to my team mates (after doing some reading online, I think I fouled a lot less too!).

Anyway, not much else has happened except that I might end up only taking one class per term as I work on my masters degree; there's a chance that I'll be working full time (minus any recovery time I need from basketball).

Oh ya, I bet that Rachel has a baby on the 22nd (I'd say the 24th for pioneer day, but it just seems like she'll never make it that far).

Since everyone likes blogs with pictures, here is one of my faithful basketball feet (no it's not nail polish):

Sunday, June 28, 2009

Some have suggested that three kids will be easier than two, I don't believe it (although we've yet to have three).

One week Rachel was sick, so she and Ethan stayed home from chruch. I took Jacob and left the diaper bag (aka toy bag) at home. Jacob was never better behaved.

On the flight down to Denver we had three seats that were next to each other (it was first class, so two seats together and one in front of them). Ethan fell asleep for as long as it took Jacob to discover that he was (although Rachel and Ethan did end up taking a good nap).

On the flight back to Eugene we had four seats (as the plane wasn't full and no one wanted to sit by a 2 year old) . Two of the seats were in row 4 and two were in row 10. I sat next to Jacob for the first part of the flight and Ethan for the second half. Both halves were peaceful.

So my point here is that right now we can play 2 on 2 and actually keep the kids happy (as long as they can't see or hear each other). So what do we do when it's 2 on 3?

Saturday, June 27, 2009

A while back I saw a headline that looked something like "house robbed after man twittered about going on vacation." We are home now. Rachel, the kids, and I took off to the Eugene airport on the 15th, only to return home after no plane would take us (we were going standby), so we drove to Portland on the 16th (at 3 am) and got on the second flight (even got first class) heading out to Denver. We then spent a week hanging out at my mom's preschool, which was pretty fun:

Then we flew home, standby (I spy someone drooling on a seat):

p.s. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in Computer Science, yes!

Tuesday, June 9, 2009

Jacob likes to wake up at the crack of dawn and come running in our room yelling "it's sunny, it's time to get up guys!" Which is really annoying at 5 am, so we got some darkening shades for their window. This morning at 9 am when I was studying for my final (which I may have failed) he comes out of his room looking very dazed and confused... then he says (with a wrinkled brow) "is it sunny out here for you guys?"

Friday, June 5, 2009

I got to know a really nice couple yesterday; he's been a member for a long time and she's come to church for something like 20 years (but is not a member). Anyway I was going to meet the missionaries over there to watch a movie (I think it's called Praise to the Man), but they never showed up (they are really, really bad about respecting people's time). So we chatted for a half-hour and I feel like I really got to know them (I've been over to there house before, and we talk almost every Sunday, but it's mostly church related).

Well, when the missionaries didn't show up I was glad I had taken a few minutes to read my scriptures as there are a lot of really good verses in Mosiah chapters 7-9. So I guess the moral of the story is that you don't have to be all church all the time but it helps to read your scriptures every now and then.

Monday, June 1, 2009

Ok, so I just posted all of my twitter into the blog, you might be thinking, why? Well, the blog is part of my journal so I wanted to get it in.

Two weeks ago: I went to Vancouver B.C. for a conference. It was pretty awesome and I hope to go as often as I can (it's a yearly deal, but I bet there are other good conferences out there). Next year it's in South Africa so I probably won't be going... But I did read the tourist safety tips for visiting South Africa, one of them said not to ask strangers to help you with your atm transactions ;)

Since then I've been paying for missing a week of school.

But we did get a van last Saturday. We are pretty happy with it as it has a built in car seat (once we saw the seat we knew this van was ours and that we truly were uncool, forever).

Jacob is currently with his grandma & papa Rogers @ the beach. Sounds like he's having a good time and I hope his grandparents are too.

And because blogs are boring unless there is a picture, here is Michal Jackson and myself (the man is a hero in computer science, I followed him around for four days with my camera waiting for a moment to get a picture with him)

Friday, May 22, 2009

victory dinner was excellent; hope all had a great week at ICSE09 and hope Steve will fund my trip to South Africa next year :)
12:46 AM May 23rd from web

demos session was cool; MS has a debugging tool that actually tests all possible scheduling's of threads to detect deadlock et al. (Chess)
6:24 PM May 22nd from web

the TB on Multicore SE was pretty awesome; they showed through a case study that Transactional Memory isn't as bad as previously thought
3:45 PM May 22nd from web

We've been thinking that Jacob needs a bigger bike for a couple of months now, so last night we let him pick one out. Did he get the motorcycle looking one? Nope. Did he get the spiderman one? Nope. He got the green one. In all fairness it does have a picture of two cars on the front, but I don't know if he noticed.

Anyway, he took it for a spin last night when we got home. There is a slight slope at the end of our sidewalk (that leads into the street). When we got to it, we checked our breaking skills, which he had demonstrated adequately on flat surfaces. Then I told him that if he got going too fast he could drive onto the grass and that would slow him down.

True to his ultra conservative nature, he drove into the grass just as he started down the hill. Unfortunately he turned a little too sharp and ended up face planting (darn those training wheels, if only he could have leaned into the turn). Anyway, he didn't waste anytime getting up, walking his bike down the hill and then continuing his ride, what a sport.

I imagine that at least 90% of the people who read this are LDS, but for the minority, when I say the church, I mean The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And no, this is not church doctrine, it's my opinion.

The other night I came across an interesting article, it was the transcript of a fireside someone gave on Blacks and the Priesthood. The speaker was an African-American who had joined the church 14 years previous to the fireside (which was held in 2002). He had struggled with this topic before he decided to get baptized. My point here is not to retype his talk, but to discuss some of his ideas.

The first is one that I completely agree with, he asks the question, why talk about it? Having been involved in the missionary work of several wards, I've had the opportunity (a code word for something else) to discuss members' feelings about sharing the gospel. Guess what the number one (or two) concern is? Ok, just think for a minute, what are your top two concerns? Seriously, stop reading and think about it. Since you are not stopping, look at this picture until you have thought about it:

Ok, I know you didn't think about it, but had you, your concerns would likely have been 1: you don't want to offend your friends (or have them think you are weirder than you are) and 2: that you are afraid they will ask you a question that you won't know the answer to. So why talk about Blacks and the Priesthood? or Polygamy? or probably hundreds of other topics? Because we don't understand them (because we never talk about it, at least, as a church we don't).

Not only do we not talk about it, we are afraid to find out. I support the counsel that we've been given to not subscribe to anti-mormon literature, but I think that we like to take it to the extreme. I think that we use this as an excuse to not research out some of our questions. I have a good friend who, when I gave him a BoM, returned the favor with an anti-mormon book. I read it very slowly, researching every claim made, and wrote a summary of what I had learned about each topic. I couldn't find a satisfactory answer (in my opinion) to every claim, but I learned a lot that I hadn't previously known. I gained a testimony of the fact that the church is true, though not perfect, and that members can be just as foolish and/or wicked as anyone (I don't want to get off on a side discussion about Judas, but remember that he was an apostle).

"And you don't see any danger with reading anti-mormon literature?"

Yes and no. The question is misguided, I think we should first focus on a primary requirement: what should we be reading? If you have two books on the same subject, one of which you were told by God is true, and another from questionable sources, which should you read? Researching some of these topics is a little like sailing uncharted waters, so you better have your liahona functioning.

"That's not fair, Lehi/Nephi were commanded to sail those waters."

True, and I think we have been commanded to study the gospel. We have Sunday school classes on church history and, like it or not, this is part of our history.

"So where can we turn for answers?"

Prayer is a ready answer that any primary kid will give you, but brother Marvin Perkins (from the above mentioned fireside) gives us his testimony by quoting D&C 9:7:

"Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me;  But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right."

Doesn't that go along with our whole "faith without works" bit? Anyone who has gained a testimony of the BoM didn't do so without reading from it, and they didn't do so without praying about it; you need both parts.

"Ok, so aside from prayer, where can we look?"

The church has a lot of manuals from which we may study, but, in my opinion, the books that strengthen our testimonies the most don't hit on many of these topics.

"Why?"

Well, we just received a first presidency message (maybe you have home teachers or maybe you are a home teacher) from President Eyring in which we were basically told to stick to the basics, they are what the Holy Ghost can testify of most powerfully. The church doesn't want to print things that we haven't received direct revelation on because we are human. We will print or say something that isn't true, and the spirit will not confirm it, thus our testimonies won't be strengthened. There is a great quote from Elder McConkie:

"I have said the same things, and people write me letters and say, 'You said such and such, and how is it now that we do such and such?' All I can say is that it is time disbelieving people repented and got in line and believed in a living, modern prophet. Forget everything that I have said, or what President Brigham Young or President George Q. Cannon or whoever has said in days past that is contrary to the present revelation. We spoke with a limited understanding and without the light and knowledge that now has come into the world. We get our truth and light line upon line and precept upon precept (2 Ne. 28:30; Isa. 28:9-10; D&C 98:11-12; 128:21). We have now added a new flood of intelligence and light on this particular subject, and it erases all the darkness and all the views and all the thoughts of the past. They don't matter anymore."

There are some books that focus on the history of the church, these books I find interesting when doing research, like some of the institute manuals and the volumes of the History of the Church.

"What about the internet?"

Because of the almost non-exhaustive supply of anti-mormon literature on the internet, many members wouldn't dare search for some of these topics. I agree that the world could do with a few less of those types of sites, but there are surprisingly many good websites. As you continue researching more topics, you will begin to recognize the good and the bad. One thing I've always seen as a good sign that the site might be ok is an acknowledgement that they are not affiliated with the church, what they say is their opinion, not church doctrine. Take everything with a grain of salt and don't stop seeking the spirit; he will tell you when the 'back' button is the right choice.

"Now my faith will really increase!"

No, probably not. You will learn some cool facts, some of which you will think, wow, if they really meant what they said, that would be awesome (I'm thinking of some of my most favorite quotes/hearsay of President Young). President Eyring is right, stick to the basics, the spirit will testify that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, that the BoM is true, and that President Monson is a prophet of God. That is all you need to know to be on the right track.

"What advice then?"

I love researching these things, I wish I had a lot more time for it. But my testimony is not based on these experiences. I read (the scriptures) and prayed, and God answered me, just like most of you. There are topics that I have concerns with, there are things that I don't understand, but I'll stick with brother Perkins when he said:

"I was fortunate enough to learn probably the most crucial lesson of my life before I was baptized. When the Stake President said that he couldn't answer my question either, but if this book is true, holding up the Book of Mormon, that there are answers out there somewhere, I knew right then that my testimony would have to always be based on the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ alone, and not any other issue. That I would move forward based upon what I did know, and never be held back because of what I didn't know."

"Ok so you agreed with one of his points, what about the others (remember we were talking about that fireside)?"

I'm tempted to dive in, but I think my message has changed, it started out as relaying some of his ideas, and turned into some of mine. Oh well, I guess it leaves me with an easy out as I can end by saying study it out,  search for it.

"All of the wonders of the internet, and not one link?"

Yes, that was on purpose (search for it): click here

We went to the temple yesterday, it was really nice to go at three on a Thursday, as there was hardly anyone there. I feel like Rachel and I are the closest after going, so it's all down hill until next month;)

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

My life has been a blur this last week or so as we have been trying to get ready for ICSE 09 (Rachel calls it a big geek conference). The professor I work for (Steve) is the general chair, so I've been working on the website (http://www.cs.uoregon.edu/events/icse2009) for almost two years, but now that the program (schedule) is finalized (we hope), we've been designing all of the signage and the printed program. I've got to say, Steve knows how to make some last minute things happen, which I guess is why he's the general chair. As for me, it'll be another long day tomorrow so I need to go to bed (if I don't wake up blame it on complications related to Warcraft III withdraws).

Sunday, April 19, 2009

When we were headed out of the house this morning, I opened the door and a wave of sunshine came flooding in. Jacob said "what's going on? why is it so sunny?" to which I responded "I know, it should be raining huh?" To which he said "ya, what's going on?" Yes, I want to move somewhere that it rains less, not for me, but for my children's perception of what is normal... on so many levels (have you ever visited Eugene?).

Thursday, April 16, 2009

I got my paycheck the other day and realized that Warcraft III was much more expensive than I thought. I guess I should say that I'll beat the next level after I work, not I'll work after I beat the next level.

On a happier note, here is a favorite song of mine, go ahead, sing along; when the kids start whining we crank it up and shout it out:

They say i need some rogaine to put in my hair
Work it out at the gym to fit my underwear
Okaley makes the shades to transform a tool
You'd hate for the kids to think that you've lost your cool

Imma do the things that i wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if i make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm fine and dandy with the me inside
One look in the mirror and i'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think

everyone likes to dance to a happy song
with a catchy chorus and beat so they can sing along
timbaland knows the way to reach the top of the charts
maybe if i work with him i can perfect the art

Imma do the things that i wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if i make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm fine and dandy with the me inside
one look in the mirror and i'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think

no, i don't care
i don't care
i don't care
i don't care
i don't care
i don't care

Imma do the things that i wanna do
I ain't got a thing to prove to you
I'll eat my candy with the pork and beans
Excuse my manners if i make a scene
I ain't gonna wear the clothes that you like
I'm fine and dandy with the me inside
one look in the mirror and i'm tickled pink
I don't give a hoot about what you think

Ok, its been 14 days since I last played basketball, and look:

This doens't seem right...

Tuesday, April 14, 2009

We've officially started looking for mini-vans, so if you have one, you might catch us peeking in through your windows. We were going to the mall to spend the rest of the gift card (mentioned in my post on February 6th) when we decided to pull into a Nissan dealership to drive around (and try not to talk to anyone) when we got cornered when we took a wrong turn. So we got out and looked at the one van they had, which we liked. The salesman wanted us to come back the next day, which was good as Rachel's parents were coming into town and her dad knows much more about cars than we do.

Saturday we went for a test drive and it seemed like things ran well, except Rachel pulled the shifter right out the socket (apparently it comes out for maintenance, I think someone forgot to put a screw back in) it was pretty funny. But then they wanted to talk serious, like we were going to drive home in our new van. We tried to explain the night before and again that day that we want to get a van before August, but are in no hurry until then.

Tuesday we went back to look at some other vans that they have on other lots. We looked at everything they have for under 20k (although we only want to spend 5-6k in addition to trading in our Outback). There weren't a ton of them, maybe 7, and the one we liked the second most (after the one we had already seen on Friday and Saturday), smelt like wet dog/throw up/wet dog throw up

Anyway, the search continues. We think we would be happy with the first van, but want to look around a bit as we really don't know that much about buying anything that costs more than $500.

The weather has been so nice that I'm starting to miss everywhere else I've lived in my life. Don't get me wrong, I can take three seasons: Thailand (rainey [and hot], hot, cold [or not hot]), Phoenix (perfect, summer, hot summer). But Eugene? cold and rainey, warm and rainey, hot and rainey. Yes, the last few days of sunshine make me want at least a different three season set, or maybe even a regular four season set.

Thursday, April 2, 2009

I think that I'm going to keep my 8 am class... which is scary since I am known for skipping my math classes, and they usually start at 10 or 11. It would be good for me to go to bed a little earlier and maybe work during the day instead of after the kids go to bed...

Oh an even sadder note, I've played basketball at the church twice now (within the last few weeks). This has been the first and second time that I've played since fifth grade (or was it sixth?). I didn't even have any tennis shoes the first week, so I got some at value village for $4.99; my blisters were much smaller the second time. Anyway, everyone fills sorry for me, so they don't really guard me or call fouls when I elbow them in the back. I only last about an hour, then I'm done (and this is half court mind you).

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Spring break is way too short. I bought WarCraft III about a month ago and didn't open it until I was finished with my last final.

Then I spent the week fighting the humans as orcs, then the orcs as humans, then the undead as humans, then the humans as undead, then the elves as undead, then the humans as orcs (again), then the night elves as orcs, then the humans as orcs (again, again), then the undead and orcs as orcs, then the humans as night elves, then the orcs as night elves, then the humans and orcs and undead as night elves then I ran out of time. I've got three more missions to go until I beat the game... then what? the expansion pack (I'm planning on Summer break), where you can bet that I'll fight (repeat the first part of this paragraph).

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Sam and Phillip came down to Eugene on Monday. It was a lot of fun seeing them and playing games. Rachel and I are pretty much experts at Rock Band as long as the setting is on easy; Phillip is a true Guitar Hero. Sam won best hiding place while playing hide-and-go-seek in our apartment. Ethan was 'it' and I was guiding him from room to room, but he never found Sam who was hiding in the couch. Tuesday we went to the temple and then they continued their journey home.

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Ethan does really well with hot food. You can take a burrito, put it in the microwave for 5 minutes then plop it down on his plate and tell him "it is hot, so be careful" and he will carefully test, and blow, and test, and blow, and an hour later, it's gone.

Jacob is a mommas boy. Last Sunday Rachel had an early meeting (part of the joy of being the primary president); I was getting the boys up and ready while stitching up my favorite pair of slacks in our bedroom. Jacob didn't want regular cereal, he wanted oatmeal, of which we have the instant kind. So after getting his oatmeal out of the microwave we had this conversation:

"be careful, it's hot"
"mommy puts it in the fridge"
"it's ok, just put a little bit on your spoon and blow on it"
"I want mommy"
"I want mommy too"
"daddy, when is mommy coming home?"
"pretty soon, but when she does we have to go to church, so eat your oatmeal"
"it's too hot"
"ya, I know, just put a little on your spoon, like this, and blow, like this"
"daddy, are you going to work" (as he points out of the kitchen)
"no"
"why not"
"it's Sunday"
"oh..., daddy, can you go fix your pants" (as he points out of the kitchen)
"yes, I'll go fix my pants"

From our bedroom I heard the fridge open and close.

Thursday, March 12, 2009

Ethan is so cute (I know, I think it's having kids for so long that's turning me into a wimp). He is cute when he is happy, shy, excited, and angry (just like his mom). He makes the funniest faces and is starting to 'talk.' He'll say things like "It's ok, don't be sad" when Jacob is having a hard time (which sounds like mumbled non-sense to people who don't live with him). Ethan is also a tantrum thrower which is really funny, he'll hit the wall, then hit the couch, then the wall, then stop and scream once, then repeat (what can he possibly be thinking). But like I said, he is so cute while doing so you can't help but love him.

Jacob makes me laugh when he tells me to be nice or go to time out. The other day I was attacking Rachel and he came out of no where and started punching me (pretty hard for a three year old) and telling me to leave her alone. He has also been reading to me lately (at night before bed) saying things like: "who's this? he's Nephi, he's a good boy, who's this? he's not being very nice (there's a lot war in the children's Book of Mormon), ok... two more pages ok, two more pages (as he is holding up two fingers)." And one more thing: "what is all this junk?!" He likes to throw this one around when there is clutter, especially when he has all of his toys out.

Tuesday, March 3, 2009

We went to Reed and Ester's wedding on Wednesday and their reception on Thursday (the 25th and 26th). The ceremony was nice, but it made me wonder: why does the person performing the marriage always talk so slow when giving advice and then rush through the ceremony? I mean, I almost think they are two different people, slow and steady (don't want to break a denture), then, "oh no! my stocks are taking a beating! get out of here!"

Tuesday, February 24, 2009

We went to the coast over the weekend with the Stephensons. It was really nice to see them again as I think the last time we got together was on Easter. They rented a sweet beach house and we ate, played, ate, played, and then ate a little more (there's always room for dessert).

One of the highlights was playing hide-and-go-seek in the dark (as the house was huge). Now you might think this is kind of dorky, but try it! Rachel and I play everytime we've been to a condo and in all of our small apartments. The only problem we have is Ethan, as he will follow you around and point at you while you are trying to hide.

The kids needed to bury all of their treasures so that we could find them next time. I think it was Faith that said we needed to mark it with a "Y" so that people wouldn't know it was treasure.

We are waiting for the waves to get our towers.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

On Valentine's day we made some breakfast together, it was a lot of fun, except that we were all sick.

Friday, February 13, 2009

Yesterday we discovered that we are all sick. Ethan has been sick for a few days now and I really feel sorry for the guy, and now Rachel and I, and probably Jacob (he only has a little cough, now), are in for it. I got up for my 9 am class, but after looking at my self in the mirror, skipped to get a little extra sleep. Then I skipped my 10 am, then 11 am, then 12 pm. I skip a lot of classes, but never for sleep! The worst part was that I still had to go to campus to meet with people at 1, 2:45, and 5.

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Today was Frank's baptism.  I don't know what the deal is, but the last few weeks of church meetings have been really great. This includes the baptism; Bishop Luke and Gary both delivered excellent remarks on baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost. Frank also made some humble and inspiring comments at the end of the meeting.

Friday, February 6, 2009

Today Rachel, Jacob and I tried to spend $45 at the mall (thanks to a gift from a certain friend in Bend). We failed. You would think that it wouldn't be that hard, right? We started out in a pet store (just window shopping of course), Jacob really liked the bunnies. Then we ventured into some kind of a dvd store. They had some t.v. series that we thought about getting (the Walton's season 7, and MacGyver season 1), but they were both about $30 so we went for a 3 for $10 and got Batman Returns, The little mask (or something like that, a kid's version of The Mask), and Anacondas.

So $10 down we went to the toy store. We searched and searched but found nothing that appealed to us. So we moved on to a Game store, but all of the ones I wanted were $50, probably had more blood and guts that I'm allowed, and would run slow on our computer. So we tried a book store and wandered and wandered and wandered. I even considered letting Rachel buy something at Victoria Secret (she used to always get lotion, but yes, I've forced her to join my boycott).

Cinnabon anyone? oh yes, we have this coupon that we got the last time we indulged, that let us buy a package of 4 or 6, and get another package of the same size for free! Since it was only a couple of dollars for the two extra rolls, we went with 12 for $13. Then this Asian restaurant was giving out free samples, which Rachel really liked, so we sunk $5.50 into a teriyaki bowl (which was pretty good).

Then, since it is Friday, our date night, we came home, ate teriyaki chicken and a Cinnabon while watching The Day After Tomorrow (a $4 treasure that we got the week earlier). All in all it was a good night, except that we still need to burn a few dollars (is that a problem?).
